The biggest problem with food today is that besides eating it, we don't pocess enough knowledge to know how to eat properly. As a certified nutritionist I'm asked a lot of questions about different myths ot misunderstandings based around food. Here are some of those questions and the corresponding answers. Will eating fat make me fat? Eating too much of anything will make you fat, but dietary fat itself doesn't have any magic weight gain properties. However, fat does contain more calories than either carbs, or proteins per gram. Carbs and protein have four calories per gram, and fat has 9 calories per gram. So the more fat you eat, the more calories you consyume, and downing too many calories every day will put you on the fast track to growing a big potbelly. But in general we're far too afraid of fat. It's a fact of life and a crucial partr of our anatomies. It encases our internal organs, courses through our veins, and provides a nice cushion whenever we take a load off our feet. It's even where you would never expect it, like inside our skulls, where it provides 70% of the protective coating for our brains and makes up 60% of our gray matter. The important thing to understand is that just as long as you're not eating too much fat, your body won't store it in in your soft pockets making you overweight. Do I need to take fish oil supplements? Probably, but the exact amount of the two long chain omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) you need remains open to debate. More won't hurt you, however, Americans should consume 3,700 milligrams of EPA and DHA a day to balance their current high intake of omega-6's and reap the heart, and brain healthy benefits of these essential fatty acids. Should you take supplements? Any diet that is based around building muscle or burning fat should me made up of whole foods that you make at home, this will ensure that you know exactly what you're eating, and how much of it. I also know that life gets in the way and sometimes convenience takes precedence, you need to know that the majority of supplements out there are crap and are only backed by a great marketing scheme to have you believe that you'll look like a Greek god, or goddes by simply taking this pill. For a beginner I would only recommend to types of supplements at first, 100% whey protein and Creatine monohydrate. The protein shake is perfect for pre, or post workout nutrition, or as a midday snack. You can make them at home and mix other healthy options with it like bananas, blueberries, peanut butter, and almond milk. Do not buy the pre made protein shakes from your food store or convenience store, they have a lot of additives that make them not a good choice. Creatine monihydrate is one of the most studied supplements on the market and has proven its self time and time again. If there was a magic pill to make you reach your fitness goals faster creatine would be it. It helps you lose weight and build muscle when used properly.
