Custom designed t-shirts are the best thing that you can flaunt in public to showcase your unique creativity. This is also an excellent way to please your dearest and nearest ones by gifting a custom designed t-shirt. Different types of designing techniques are available in the market. Let’s take a look at one of the most popular techniques – the screen printing technique.
What does screen printing mean?Screen printing is also known as “silk screening”. This is a popular method of printing graphics, texts and images on t-shirts using special thick inks. These types of inks lay on the upper portion of the fabric rather than soaking into it. These days, most companies use this screen printing technique and from years it has been the only way to create a massive amount of t-shirts at once. Using thicker inks, screen printing technique is the better option for graphics where only one or two types of colors are being used. Compared to DTG, screen printing makes the colors popped out. Thick inks have a softer feeling when touched and will make the t-shirt look really amazing. In addition, it is more affordable compared to other printing options when you are looking for a larger quantity. How does it work? Now, you have got the basic idea about screen printing technique to design a t-shirt. So, you must be wondering how it works. Unlike DTG, a thin mesh is attached tightly over the frame which is called the screen. It’s generally made of silk. However, these days, mostly polyester is used as a screen. A negative of the particular design is getting printed onto this screen which will be placed against the t-shirt. Once the negative set properly, ink should be rolled over the screen only on those areas where the image allows the ink. Once, ink is applied, they are kept aside to set on the t-shirt.
This is the basic structure of the screen printing technique but the whole procedure is a lot more complicated than that. Different types of inks, chemicals and techniques required to ink a t-shirt. What are the different types of inks used for screen printing? One thing everyone should realize that screen printing is a real art form in several ways. It’s not just about printing anything on apparel. It’s required to make sure that the colors don’t overlap, prints don’t crack, the ink is thick enough and the design is straight. So, as you can see, ink plays a vital role here. Let’s take a look at the most popular ink that is used for the screen printing technique. Plastisol printing: This is the standard ink used for most of the screen-printing jobs. This is an oil-based ink formulated from pigment and PVC molecules that are suspended in the plasticizing emulsion. These types of inks don’t dry out but required to be cured at about 160 degree Celsius for 2-3 minutes to wait for the PVC and plasticizer to melt. Once, both have melted, they are bound to each other to build up a harder compound. Plastisol inks tend to fix on top of the fibers rather than soaked into them and thus they create a textured and raised feel. Two other types of inks also exist there – water-based inks and discharge inks.
